Herman’s Vegetarian Buffet: gourmet food with stunning views of Stockholm

If you are looking for the best vegetarian restaurant in Stockholm (which doesn’t also carry the Stockholm price tag), then look no further. Whether you are a vegetarian, vegan, or complete carnivore, Herman’s is for you! (Yes – calling all meat lovers – with the variety on this menu – even you will be satisfied by this gourmet vegetarian buffet!)

Located on Sodermalm, Herman’s boasts incredible views looking back into the city and across the water to Gronalund, Stockholm’s very own amusement park.  With seating for 40 guests inside, and a further 200 in their well-kept gardens for those beautiful Swedish summer days, you won’t struggle to realise why so many Stockholmers rate this place highly!

The buffet is priced at 179 SEK in the evening on weekends(at the time of writing) but if you want a real bargain, check out the Herman’s website for midweek lunch prices and special offers(currently 115 SEK between 11-15 on weekdays).  Additional barbecue options are available on weekends throughout the summer and they often have themed evenings, including Vegan Wednesdays.  Every weekend, a different theme serves as the inspiration for the buffet dishes, including Tex Mex, Indian, Asian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Scandinavian cuisines, and if you are visiting in the winter, look out for their Christmas themed vegetarian menu.

While the weekend price is a bit more than you would pay for some dagens lunch (daily lunch) deals around Stockholm, this price includes a hot and cold vegetarian buffet, bread, tea, coffee and a huge selection of hot and cold dishes and salads.  But remember that Herman’s is also open into the evening (22:00 in the Summer, 21:00 in winter – note that the kitchen closes one hour before the close of the restaurant, with coffee & cakes available until close), meaning that if you come here for an evening meal out, Herman’s really is very good value by Stockholm standards!

And if you weren’t sold already – they are one of the few restaurants I have found to be completely allergy friendly – if you have gluten, lactose, dairy, vegan or other dietary requirements, signs by the buffet cart direct you to speak to a member of staff to find out which dishes are suitable for your dietary needs.

And your sweet cravings have got the better of you by the end of the meal, try their selection of desserts, available at the counter, including raw-food selection of delights. You will not be disappointed.

Some friendly advice before you go –

  • When you arrive, walk straight through the restaurant to the cash desk – you pay for your meal before you begin. (This seems straight forward but it did appear to cause confusion with some guests. Maybe a couple more signs would be a good addition Herman’s?)
  • If you are expecting table service, you’ll be disappointed. You collect your food yourself and you clear your own table into the containers provided, but don’t worry – exploring the colours and aromas of the buffet for yourself is all part of the charm and the experience.

Make Hermans’ part of your Stockholm itinerary – you won’t be disappointed!
